Cooking with herbs and spices learning station
Use Less Salt and More Herbs and Spices is a Learning Station that can be used as part of a workshop or at an event. It can easily be expanded into a Lesson in a Box by a Community Educator who is comfortable teaching about cooking with different foods. You can use this Learning Station to complement lessons about eating more fruits and vegetables; or about balancing calories because fresh herbs and spices help make vegetables more interesting to eat. Be sure to get a least one fresh herb for your display. Cilantro is a good choice because it is used in many cultural dishes and is generally easy to find at neighborhood stores. Hot and mild peppers are also a wonderful addition. They are colorful and often used like an herb to accent flavor in cooking. Signs and Directions are below. Only copy what you need. Laminate your signs. |

You will need a plain solid color tray or flat aluminum tray.
Cilantro, parsley, basil, dill, hot red and green peppers are nice choices. Use at least one or more fresh herbs. You can always add mushrooms or other produce depending on what you are demonstrating. You will need some way to make your posters stand upright. |

You will need to print 2 “Make Your Own Herb and Spice Mix” posters front and back so one can be placed upright and one can lay flat on the table.Make sample herb mixes and/or use commercial herb mixes that are salt free. Labels you can use for your bottles. Have products labels of Adobo and other flavorings that are high in salt. Be sure to display your Salt Shaker poster. Do not let people taste your mixes. |
